Mark Twain Caves: Samuel Clemens Coolest Secret

Writer's picture: J & JJ & J

Jeremy and I love history, and me especially loves literature...to the point where I have an actual library in our guest room...I'll post photos of it sometime. Anyway, on the drive back from Colorado, I discovered Mark Twain's childhood town. It's called Hannibal, Missouri. It's a cute little village with tons of diners and TONS of Mark Twain memorabilia and museums. We learned that Becky Thatcher was a real person, and so were several other characters in the Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn stories. After eating a delicious brunch at the cutest diner in town, we decided to hop on a cave tour.

Jeremy and I love nature, so to get a glimpse of something off the beaten path in a random town in Missouri was right up our alley. The caves are about 3 miles long, but the tour path is about a mile. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and funny, and she was only 15 years old! Crazy! We saw the signature of Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain), the hideout of Jesse James, and many other super cool things (like bats!). I would highly recommend this tour if you are ever passing through Hannibal.

The visitors center has books, gems, crystals, maps, clothes and of course the touristy trinkets...and it was totally worth the stop. Mark Twain plays a pivotal role in literature, American history, and the overall sense of nostalgia

for any book lover.

These caves were a great way to end a much needed relaxing yet exciting anniversary for us.
